A study of prevalence of STDs from a rural village in gujrat,india among the reproductive age group(15-49yrs)subjects

Introduction: Globally the magnitude of problem is that an average of more than 685000 people are infected every day with STDs.IN adults aged 15-49 yr STDs was more than 333 million in 1995.The annual incidence of STDs in india is 5%
Methods: This study is conducted in Dardi village of rajkot dist of gujrat,india.It has population of approximately 3000.Majority of people of this village were farmers.Total 100 houses were randomly selected for this study.From every even number house male aged 15-49 yr was selected randomly and from every odd number female aged 15-49 yr was selected randomly for detailed investigation.The green card was given to each subject.A health camp approach was used for data collection. In each camp apart from general population,the study subjects were motivated to attend health camps by health workers who would visit identified houses priror to the conduct of medical camps.The inclusion criteria will be all attendants in the 15-49 yrs presenting clinical symptoms based on standard case defination of etiological based classification of STDs.
Results: Out of total patients attended polydiagnostic camp 55.94% were males and 44.06% were females.About half of female(45.25%) had obstetric and gynec problem.Nearly one third male patients attended both medicine and skin OPD.Out of 50 males 4% were HIV positive while out of 50 females 22% had vaginal discharge and 8% had genital wart.So the total prevalence of STD was 17%.
Conclusions: Information about transmission of HIV/STDs needs to be targeted.Provision of syndromic management of STD and strengthing of HIV counseling.More and more IEC activities to be taken in rural areas,with the help of audio visual displays and drama or role pay.Health education about maintenance of personal hygienean encourage National and International reproductive health,family planning and AIDS programmes as well as donor agencies to include condom provision and distributin in their programming and funding priorities.
