Introduction: Sexual dysfunction has been described in men with HIV infection, but to date , little work has been done on HIV infected women. Women now make up a significant proportion of patients within clinics in Europe. Sexual dysfunction has a major impact on womens lives including adherence to medication. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and nature of sexual difficulties experienced by HIV infected women Methods: Women were asked set questions while attending a dedicated HIV womens clinic family clinic or nurse led HIV clinic. The study started with two global sexual function questions: "Have you been satisfied with sex over the past 12 months ?"; and " Have you experienced any sexual problems in the last 12 months ?". Results: 40 sexually active women were included in this study. 35 were of African descent. 20 (50%) had not been satisfied with sex over the past 12 months. Contributing factors included: bitterness towards men since HIV diagnosis, fear of HIV disclosure, partners refusing to wear condoms and aggressive partners. 25 (62%) of the women said that they had experienced sewxual problems in the last 12 months. These included lack of desire, anorgasmia, pelvic pain, inability to concieve, fear of sex and bacterial vaginosis.Condom use was not related to reported sexual dysfunction. Conclusions: Sexual dysfunction is common in women with HIV infection in our unit.Women attribute sexual dysfunction to their HIV diagnosis and stigma.
