Abstract
Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTC) of HIV/AIDS in the Atlantico State, Colombia: a pilot study

Background:
It is estimated that 140,000 adults and children were living with HIV/AIDS in Colombia by the end of 2002. In the Atlantic State (northern region of Colombia), 1,663 cases of HIV/AIDS had been identified by May 2002. Most of the new HIV infections occurred in heterosexual young people (79%) of whom 25% were women.
Methods:
After training 300 health care professionals from local health centers in the Atlantico State in PMTCT, 10,224 pregnant women from local communities underwent free pre and post test HIV counseling of which 5,112 consented to be tested for HIV using the ELISA Test. Thirty five women underwent confirmatory Western Blot (WB).
Results:
Out of 5,112 pregnant women tested, 23 (0.45%) were HIV positive. AZT was administered to 13 pregnant HIV-infected women and their newborns according to the ACTG 076 protocol. In the other 10 HIV cases, either the mother or the newborn failed to receive AZT according to protocol. All 23 children were born alive. Two children have been found to be HIV positive (one who received AZT according to protocol and one from the other group).
Conclusions:
Although the HIV prevalence rate among pregnant women appears to be below 1% in the Atlantico State in Colombia, an increase is expected in the number of HIV positive pregnant women due to civil war, and the large number of internally displaced populations, lack of trained health care providers on HIV/AIDS, and the lack of funding for PMTCT programs.
