Abstract
An education and support workshop for people living with HIV-related lipodystrophy
C J Finlon Center for Special Studies, NY Presbyterian Hospital, New York, NY, United States
Issue: HIV-Associated Lipodystrophy (HAL) is a complication of HIV treatment and/or infection that can lead to depression, lowered self-esteem, reduced socialization and compromised treatment adherence in those affected. Physical changes resulting from HAL may be experienced as markers of HIV infection causing individuals to feel stigmatized. Treatment options are currently limited and the present understanding that HAL is related to HAART can lead to frustration and reduced trust between those affected and their medical providers.
Description: Living with: Lipodystrophy is a workshop that helps participants identify how changes in appearance have affected quality of life, self-image and feelings of self-efficacy. The workshop seeks to validate feelings of loss while at the same time develooping a sense of personal responsibility for self care. Educational interventions offer updates on recent research, and help participants develop their own resources for ongoing education. The workshop emphasizes the incomplete understanding of HAL and urges participants to become involved in research, education and advocacy efforts of their own.
Lessons Learned: Individuals with HAL often report dismissive response from medical providers and others when discussing how changes in appearance have affected their lives. The opportunity to do so in a supportive environment can reduce feelings of helplessness and hopelessness allowing them to focus on other aspects of their lives.
Recommendations: Organizations offering services to people living with HIV/AIDS and HAL should recognize the real impact these changes in appearance can have on all aspects of an individual's life and offer appropriate services. Workshop formats are an efficient way to provide service and can be expanded to ongoing support groups if needed.
