Objectives: The problems of children of PLWHAs known as OVCs are very serious in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. Hence, a study is conducted to assess the conditions of OVC children with regard to their home care and holistic care in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, India, which has 55,000 children affected/infected by HIV/AIDS.
Methods: Both qualitative and quantitative tools were used. Quantitative data was collected from 100 OVC children and 100 caregivers through administering questionnaires. Qualitative data was collected through 15 FGDs with community members and 25 In-depth Interviews with various stakeholders such as government officials, Healthcare givers and NGOs.
Results: Most of the OVC are HIV/AIDS affected children and one-fourth of the children are HIV infected children as per the sample. Majority are Paternal orphans and few are double orphans and are staying with their grandparents. Most of them are in the age group of 11-13 years and poor. They feel that they have no financial assistance for education. Majority feel disturbed and sad and are discriminated by the relatives and friends, but they do not face ill treatment by their family members or caregivers. Majority in their families face problems like lack of care and support, clothes, medicines etc. They express that they do not get any help from community. They feel that they have increased the burden of their family members and caregivers. Most of the children are facing health problems like Weight loss, Vitamin deficiency, Nighttime fever, weakness etc. None of the infected children received any ARV Therapy. Most of them want medical facilities to take care of their health problems.
Conclusions: The study concludes that OVC children lack proper home care and the children accord major priority for food, clothes, education and medical facilities in terms of their needs and hence need immediate intervention by government and NGOs.
