Abstract
ABC-Nepal interventions against girl-trafficking and HIV and AIDS in Morang district Eastern Nepal

Objectives: Girl-trafficking in Morang district of Nepal is over-whelming problem and STIs and HIV/AIDS virus spreading among trafficked girls. Methods: ABC/Nepal is a non profit social organization established in 1987 in Kathmandu. It works for the rights of women and children with special focus on the prevention of girl-trafficking. More than 2500 girls are trafficked each year in brothels of India. These girls get infected with HIV and STDs within four to five years of time and forced to return their home town and then they become the primary source of HIV infection in community. ABC-Nepal, hence, formed a district level network group at Biratnagar city, Morang in 1998 to combat with girl trafficking. The network group consists of 111 members from different organizations and disciplines. It has conducted several activities in Morang district in the year 2005 to reduce girl trafficking. Some of the major accomplished activities are: Community awareness against girl-trafficking, HIV/AIDS and STDs, Formation of women cooperatives, Street drama and sensitization, rehabilitation and treatment for rescued girls and vocational training for self sustainability. Results: In 2005 the Network group has identified eight high risk areas for girl-trafficking, solved 255 domestic conflicts, 12 sexual exploitations and 40 rape cases, saved 89 girls from being trafficked, rescued 24 girls from Indian circus and rehabilitated them and trained for self sustainability. Conclusions: Girls trafficking and domestic violence is very critical position in the country. ABC Nepal has the solution of the critical invironment.
