Methods: In the present article the national secondary data on cases of AIDS occurred by sanguineous transfusion notified from 1980 to June of 2006 were analyzed. The profile of the epidemic was presented by region of residence, gender, age and year of diagnosis. The legislation on the control of blood quality donation was studied and correlated to the incidence rate of sanguineous transfusion AIDS cases. Results: Most of the cases occurred in males from 30 to 49 years old, in the Southeast region of Brazil. The study showed that since the implementation of the first legal measure (Ciplan 09) a decrease in the number of cases of HIV transmission. Conclusions: A reduction of blood transfusion cases of AIDS in the country was observed showing the effectiveness of the legal measures. However, it was also verified that some cases notified in the blood transfusion category did not fulfill the criteria proposed by the National Program of DST/AIDS, evidencing the necessity of improvement of the System of Surveillance of this type of category of transmission.
