Abstract

Treatment of oral candidiasis in HIV patients

Solomon K.1

Objective: To study break down of Oral Candidiasis, the most common opportunistic infection in HIV +ve persons, with itraconozole capsules, the existing modalities of treatment not yielding satisfactory results.
Methods: 72 persons were selected who are HIV +ve and having oral candidiasis. Oral candidiasis was diagnosed by fungal culture and KOH smear.
Treatment was given with itraconazole 200mg daily for 15 days. 4 patients were drop outs and the rest 56 patients were regularly followed up to 6 months.
Results: All the 56 patients were cured of candidiasis clinically after a mean period of the 5th day and mycologically after a mean period of the 12th day. Out of the 56 patients who had completed treatment and follow up, 8 patients had a re-infection after 4 months. The rest 36 have not had oral candidiasis after a follow up period of 5 months.
Conclusion: As the cure rate (56 out of f72=15%) of oral candidiasis with itraconazole capsules 200mg daily for 15 days is convicing, this may be chosen as the treatment for oral candidiasis, which is one of the most common opportunistic infections in HIV population.
