Methods: This was a cross section survey done in Rakai district where the first AIDS victim was identified in Uganda. The study population was pregnant women (> 6 months) aged betwen 18-40. 815 women who accepted voluntary counselling and testing were recruited.Of these,525 tested HIV sero positive.Data was analysed using Chi2 square tests to asses trends of adaption and adherence. Results: Of all the total sample,98% were knowledgable about the existance of PMTCT services.However,60 of them were not knowlegdeable about its importance.Among those who were willing to undergo PMTCT,75% were economically better,68% had completed secondary school education and 40% were willing to under take comlementary feeding. However only 32% were willing to adhere to exclusive breast feeding. Those who were un willing to under go PMTCT were 41%.Of these,73% had not completed primary education,54% of them were in traditional marriages ,and 80% were from excessively poverty striken house holds. Conclusions: Knowledge of the importance of PMTCT is still low. PMTCT up take is still low.The low PMTCT up take is associated with low income and education levels. Therefore PMTCT intervantions should aim inreasing knowlegde on the importance of PMTCT, Education and income levels amang HIV positive women.
