Objectives: To assess the male partners´ response to HIV prevention and treatment services aimed at preventing vertical transmissions.
Methods: Three thousand and twenty five volunteers were screened for HIV antibodies through PMTCT program using rapid test algorithm, 99.2% of volunteers were pregnant women attending antenatal clinic and 0.8% were the male partners of infected women.
Results: Prevalence rate of 4.23% was recorded, 3.9% among the women and 0.33% among the male partners of infected pregnant women. Polygamy rate of 11.7% was recorded among the volunteers studied , respective prevalence rate of 4.00% and 0.23% were recorded in monogamous and polygamous volunteers. Age distribution of infection recorded 99.2% and 0.8% of the total at age groups 16- 45 years and >45 years. Gender distribution of infection has shown variation with volunteers´ age, at age 16- 25 years and >25 years females recorded prevalence rates of 2.31% and 1.59% respectively. Males´ prevalence rates at these age groups were 0.03% and 0.3%. Male partners´ response to HIV testing and counseling services recorded low attendance rate of 21.2% out of the expected total of 118. Out of those tested, 60% have discordant HIV status when compared with their female partners. Out of the total infected polygamous females tested only 75% of their male partners´ responded to HIV counseling and testing, of which 3 were infected. HIV infection risk of volunteers is significantly related to their age, partners response, low education and sex at P<0.01. Polygamous status of volunteers is insignificantly related to thier prevalence rate P>0.05. SPSS v 11.0 analyzed the data using ANOVA and comparison made by LSD.
Conclusions: Males´ low response to HIV prevention services and transmission risk associated with partners of discordant HIV status could increase the community risk of vertical transmissions. Mobilization and awareness campaigns should target male partners of infected women, through both religious and cultural accepted ways.
