Objectives: Despite proofs of VCT effectiveness in HIV disease prevention and management, there are limited reports on experience with pre and post HIV test counseling in developing countries. In view of this, we aimed to bring to the fore the Voluntary Counseling and Testing experience at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Methods: The present study was conducted at the Voluntary Counseling and testing Center, All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) New Delhi, a tertiary health care center and National HIV Reference Center. Participants were 1169 men and 581 females attending the VCTC clinic from February 2005 to March 2006. After informed consent and counseling, socio-demographic and behavioral details were recorded for the patients and blood sample was taken from patients who were willing to get tested for HIV. The sociodemographic and behavior characteristics of the patients were analyzed for their association with Chi square test. Odds ratio was calculated for each of the variable, to analyze the strength of association with HIV serostatus.
Results: Out of 1750 patients, 322 (27.545%) males and 156 females (26.89%) tested HIV positive. HIV seropositivity was observed to be associated to participant age (~ 1.5 for 25-44 yrs age group), marital status (2.34 times in married patients), primary or lower education level (1.5 times), citing spouse death/spouse HIV infected as the reason for seeking VCT (2.218 times) and reporting history of risk behavior as reason for getting tested
Conclusions: Through this study, we could highlight some sociodemographic and behavior patterns, which were associated with HIV positive status and put an individual at a higher risk of HIV infection. Results of the present study highlight the implementation and efficacy of voluntary HIV counseling and testing in developing nation like India.
