Issues: Best practice in health promotion interventions are ideally informed by localised social/cultural research findings. In many countries this is not possible, due to either an absence of research capacity/facilities or a gulf between academic researchers and community based organisations.
Description: This skills building session bridges the gap between knowledge and action by 1) empowering researchers to contribute directly to community based interventions and 2) building the capacity of community based workers to interpret social science as well as undertake effective evaluation methods. This session will 1) demonstrate an effective and equitable model of participation and partnership between social scientists and health promotion program designers; 2) offer practical skills to community based workers that will enable them to design and implement effective research and evaluation including basic skills in understanding epidemiological and social research findings; 3) offer practical skills to researchers with which to engage effectively with program development at a community level; 4) enable participants to transfer methods, principles and values of effective research/practice partnerships to their local communities.
Lessons learned: Through effective skills building of community based workers as well as researchers both social science practice and community based interventions can be qualitatively improved.
Recommendation: This session recommends a model of participation and partnership that is simultaneously equitable and acknowledges the diversity of disciplinary knowledge in effective research design and program delivery.
