Background : The long standing AIDS epidemic in Thailand has inevitably lead to adult and child mortality. Encouraged by the ready availability for both epidemiological and behavioral data, a number of modeling efforts on the impact of AIDS have been undertaken in Thailand. However, so far there have been no an attempt to make HIV/AIDS projection for Bangkok. Therefore, this study provides an estimate and projection to understand the impact of HIV/AIDS on the Bangkok population.
Methods: The method used in this study are to estimate and project HIV prevalence for adults and to use the models project the magnitude and mortality impact of AIDS on the Thai population.Data was obtained from antenatal clinics that tests for HIV infection among pregnant women remains the major source of adult HIV prevalence for Bangkok.
Result : The projection suggested that the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Bangkok would be around 100,000 at the end of 2000, or one-seventh of the total infected number in Thailand. Annual AIDS cases and new AIDS deaths would be approximately 7,000 per year. Since AIDS kills adults in their prime reproductive ages, it is therefore an inevitable impact on children. The projection results in around 400 HIV positive births per year. If ARV intervention providing for infected pregnant women are fully implemented in the year 2001, those number would be decline by 50%. However, approximately 6,000 AIDS orphans are projected by 2000 and increase to 7,400 by 2001.
Conclusion : A major policy implication of these dire results is that the fight against AIDS should get the attention of greater and continuous effort by authorities at all level. The best approach to address the impact of AIDS remains primary prevention. Preventing young adults from HIV infection, in effect save children's lives from AIDS.
