Background:
We sought to do a study to determine the sexually transmitted disease (STD) profiles and HIV prevalence in patients with vaginal discharge.
Methods
500 cases of vaginal discharge were randomly selected and studied in an STD clinic and gynecology OPD in Civil Hospital, Ahmedebad, between January 1999 and January 2001. All patients were clinically examined, thoroughly investigated, and treated along with their partners.
Results:
The most prevalent cases were: Candidiasis 230 (46.0%); Trichomoniasis 134 (26.8%); Bacterial vaginosis 106 (21.2%); Nonspecific urethritis 24 (4.8%); Gonorrhea 24 (1.2%); Candidial and trichomonal infection [together] 22 (4.4%). Out of the 500 cases, 54 (10.8%) were found to have genitoulcerative disease with abnormal vaginal discharge and 9 (1.8%) were found to be HIV positive. From 200 of their sexual partners, 10 (5.0%) had genitoulcerative disease, 32 had candidial balanoprosthitis (16%), 6 were VDRL positive (3%), and HIV reactivity was found in 7 cases (3.5%).
Conclusion:
Our present study concludes that female patients with vaginal discharge carry many undetected STDs and therefore require more detailed and thorough clinical examination/treatment (along with their partners) to prevent STD/HIV transmission.
