BACKGROUND:Immigration has played a more crucial part in the social and economic geography of Canadian cities. Women represent an increasing proportion of reported HIV cases in Canada, and accounted for 24% of positive HIV test reports in 2000.Each year, Ontario receives large number of immigrants from many countries throughout the world. The objective of the survey is to discover the best way to educate these women and thus prevent them from getting infected. The adopted strategy was to collect a heterogeneous,non-random sample. Immigrant women were assembled in a computer-equipped room. The survey was self administrated. Our concept was that the experience of answering the survey made a good starting point for the free-form focus group discussions.Recomendations:The changing demographic picture among new case reports in Waterloo Region underscores the need for new and innovative HIV prevention education within this culturally diverse population. The challenge to AIDS educator’s remains to deliver a message that will:Personalize the individual’s awareness of risk.Motivate the individual to accept the personal responsibility to change or modify their risk behaviors.Reduce the potential harm from HIV to themselves and others.Immigrant populations to Canada have historically experienced discrimination at different levels in our society.
