Abstract
Consequenses and implication of HIV/AIDS on healthy, welfare and development
K D K Kasente KELC, NairobiI, Kenya
Issue: What are likely consequences of the increasing number of HIV/AIDS rates? Can declining economy like Kenya’s survive? (Explanations and figures when representing the paper) This economic growth of 0.4% only, can this growth sustains population growth of 3%. In view this scenario, can Kenya offer stable healthy, welfare and development? Critical analysis by the economic reports and newspaper reports could reveal much. Projects: National debts stands at US$ 7b. Interest to service the debt makes it impossible for the Govt to invest in human development as well as economic development. Social services suffer massively. S.A.P (World Bank) and retrenchment exercise. NASCOP (National Aids Control Programme) report of 2000. Infections stands at about 2.5m, 1.5m have already died. No of HIV/AIDS Orphans 1.5m. National prevalence rate 14-24%. Youth account for 50%-60%, most affected age group is 16-24. Hospital bed occupancy 50%-70%, periodic death of teachers may impede academic progress thus affecting all sections of Kenyan society. Lessons learnt: Social tensions e.g. strikes, hooliganism, increasing social violence Likely decrease in population growth Creation of dependency syndrome e.g. depending on donors and friendly countries Generation gap thus affecting human continuity Shortage of food. Shortage of labour especially labour intensive e.g. coffee, tea, sisal and rice plantations etc. Decrease in life expectancy. Structuring government budgets further and creating budgets deficits Increase of orphanages, old peoples' home because of generations gaps. Recommendations: Political commitment (this is already in place) Empowering countries to cope through education Plural involvement at all levels. (Full explanation on presentation) Introducing multisecterial approach (like Uganda) Networking at debts, village, ministries, national and international levels.
