Background: Efforts to provide young people, contextually, with opportunities for learning and deciding for VCT, to increase use of and satisfaction, largely revolve around facility-based and not community based approaches. Methods: Youth [ages14-21] visiting AIDS Information Center (AIC) and Naguru Teenage Information and Health Center (NTIHC) between March and May 2001 were interviewed upon exiting; 369 youth at AIC and 399 at NTIHC.Data were collected through semi-structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Results: Peers/partners/ siblings were the main source of information about VCT services at AIC as reported by 75% of the females and 52% of the males.Youth at AIC (82%) discussed their intention to take an HIV test with someone. When asked who motivated them to come for services on the particular day, youth at AIC mentioned partners (47%) and peers (27%).Girls’ decision to visit AIC was more likely to be motivated by partners (61%) than boys’ (33%).At AIC, youth(47%) who went with someone for services were accompanied by a partner.Over half of youth at NTIHC heard about the RH services offered at the center from peers/partners/siblings. Youth (52%) at NTIHC discussed their intention to seek RH services at the facility with someone.Youth at NTIHC were motivated to come for services by peers (27%),brothers (10%),mothers(11%), partners(10%), sister(7%) with girls more likely than boys to mention the influence of partner, sister,or mother.Peer influence was strong among boys. Accompanied youth at NTIHC were with peers(47%), sisters(18%), and partners(12%). Conclusions: Need for community-level behaviour change interventions for VCT among youths is pertinent in Uganda.Available social network indicators prompt for community level interventions and initiatives.Responsiveness to gender and cultural definitions of sex and sexuality are imperative. This highlights the primary and secondary level dimensions of behaviour change among youths.
