HIV/AIDS: Implication on Sri Lankan Children
By Lionel R. Amarakoon, Country Information Officer

Abstract
Issues
HIV/AIDS is more than just a health problem. We have to take it as a socio-economic and a human rights issue. While Sri Lanka is still a 'low prevalence' country m any behavioural risk factors are present. The on going conflict and consequent wide spread circular migration has added to Sri Lanka's vulnerability to the disease. There is reluctance on the part of clinician and Para medical personnel to care for AIDS patients.Mistaken belief among policy makers that giving prominence to HIV/AIDS will affect the hospitality industry of this island.
Description
-Policy decision taken to provide anti-retroviral drugs to infected mothers to prevent perinatal transmissions.
-STD/HIV/ has been introduced as a subject in the school curriculum of the middle and secondary schools (year 6-13).
-Training of consultant paediatricians to care for children with HIV/AIDS.
-Addressing issues related to HIV/AIDS through the reproductive health programme.
-Involment of government and non-governmental organizations in the prevention of HIV/AIDS among different population groups, including children.
Lessons learned
UNCRC provides a framework for promoting and protecting the rights of children.NGO co-ordination on HIV/AIDS issues is poor. Maternal and child health services which serve large number of people could improve the quality and relevance of their service if they would be more "AIDS Conscious".
Need to address:(a)Development problems of children
To Implement:(b) Programmes on reproductive health
To have:( c ) Inter-sectoral partnerships to reduce HIV/AIDS impact on children/young people
To implement action which will:Implement more AIDS conscious maternal and child health/family planning programmes.
(d)Facilitate NGO co-ordination on HIV/AIDS issues.
