R Hussnain AMAL Human Development Network, Islamabad, Pakistan
Background Target population is out of school male youth aged 11-19 (usually coming from poor strata of society, mostly work in motor-workshops earning 10 Cents per day). Many hardships plague this segment of society, one area of extreme vulnerability, which has not received any attention is sexual exploitation. The first step to meet our goal was to make a Rapid Situation Analysis (RSA) & based on its findings an intervention plan was formulated. Objectives of RSA: Obtain quantitative information in order to initiate the intervention. Familiarize ourselves with relevant vocabulary for the project use. Assess existing knowledge, intent, trial & practices in relation to sexuality. Know level of perceived risks of HIV/AIDS among peers & Ustad-Shagird relationships. Develop ownership for the intervention by involving the community from the initial stage of project. Determine the in-depth knowledge & attitude of Father & Ustad regarding sexual molestation & harassment. Research Techniques Participants Field Observation Focus Group Discussion In-depth interviews Findings of RSA: Population at risk aged 5-18 years. Education level of children & parents is very low. Population lives in below poverty level. Hygiene conditions are very poor & there are no health clinics present in the area. Population may have heard of the terminology of AIDS & HIV positive but there is very little awareness as to what it means & what are consequences of contacting the disease. Learning Efforts will be fruitless until the ustaad/ supervisor & parents are trained and sensitized Training design will reflect issues surrounding wide spread drug addiction, transgender sex workers, poverty, rights & violence IEC materials must reflect & be sensitive to specific socio-cultural behavioral norms & values of defined target group and stake holders Above mentioned issues being very tabooed, there needs to be a communication strategy that can facilitate smoothly
