Background: Partner referral for patients with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has limited efficacy. There is need to understand factors influencing partner referral with a view of remedial action. To estimate the proportion of patients with STIs who seek care with partners and identify determinants for seeking care with the sexual partner.
Methods: Using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models, 81 patients who sought care with partners were compared with 141 patients who referred and with 377 patients who did not refer partners on social-demographic; type of partnerships; sexual behaviour; and on psycho-social factors. The study used a consecutive STD clinic sample.
Results : of the 599 sexual partners elicited 81 (14%) sought care with the index patient. The independent predictors of seeking care with partner were: being male; being married; being examined in the laboratory; being older than 25 years; previously having a sexual partner treated; find it easy to have partner treated; being able to discuss partner treatment with partner and attributing the source of disease to a sexual partner.
Conclusions: Targeting young unmarried women with health education messages aimed at STD symptom recognition, increasing self-efficacy and communication skills may increase the proportion of patients seeking care with sexual partners.
